First Day with Braces

Your first days with braces are usually when your teeth are the most sore. It normally takes 3-5 days for the soreness to end. During this initial period, you can take whatever you would take if you develop a headache to help relieve the soreness. Warm salt water rinses several times a day may help make your mouth feel better. Wax will be given to you before you leave the office, and it can be used in areas where you may get some initial rubs with the braces.

Your first few days with braces may require eating softer foods because of the soreness of the teeth. Once the soreness is gone, you can eat more normally. To avoid breaking or damaging your braces, we do ask that certain foods be avoided, such as foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky or chewy.

The success of orthodontic treatment depends upon your cooperation. Keeping your braces and teeth clean helps the teeth move faster. Coming to regularly scheduled appointments helps to keep your estimated treatment time on track, as does avoiding foods which will damage the braces and wearing elastics or rubber bands as directed by the orthodontist.

There will be a general loosening of teeth throughout treatment time which is normal and to be expected. The teeth need to be a little loose in order to move, but will become rigidly fixed in their new positions at the end of treatment time once they become stabilized by retainer wear.

Our ultimate goal is to give you a healthy, beautiful smile that you will be proud to show off.
